Furniture Plywood in the Philippines: How to Choose the Right Type for Your Project?

As we all know, the Philippines has a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by consistently high temperatures and humidity, a long rainy season, and high air humidity. This makes wooden furniture prone to moisture absorption and swelling, termite infestation, and warping and loss of durability, especially for doors and cabinets.

Therefore, choosing the right plywood is crucial for furniture making. It not only reduces after-sales risks and costs but also makes the furniture more heat-resistant, avoiding the hassle of renovations and repairs.

This article mainly describes how to choose plywood and what type of plywood is most suitable for the Philippine climate.

1.Why Plywood Is the Top Choice for Philippine Furniture Projects?

This is mainly due to the climate of the Philippines and the different physical properties of each type of board.

MDF (Medium-density Fiberboard): Although high-density options are available, it is still made from wood fibers. It’s made by gluing together shredded wood chips to form a single board, leaving many gaps that the glue cannot completely fill. This makes it prone to swelling when exposed to moisture, not waterproof, and has poor nail-holding power, making it susceptible to damage during secondary nailing. Therefore, it’s generally not recommended for furniture making in humid climates due to high after-sales costs and poor durability.

Particleboard: Although the particles are larger than MDF, the principle is similar. It’s made by machine-shredding wood and then gluing it together. Therefore, its disadvantages are obvious, similar to MDF. Its only advantage is that it doesn’t warp when used for cabinet doors.

Plywood: Especially 100% eucalyptus core plywood, its nail-holding power is twice that of MDF and particleboard. Because it is a hardwood with a high density, it has excellent moisture and water resistance, is not easily deformed, and has good load-bearing capacity. The only drawback is that it is heavier than poplar, but it is more durable and more suitable for the humid and rainy climate of the Philippines, as well as for furniture that is susceptible to moisture, such as kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities.

2. Common Types of Furniture Plywood in the Philippines

Marine Grade Plywood: Kitchen and damp area indoor furniture, bathroom vanities, water-adjacent furniture, high-end moisture-proof projects. Mainly use full eucalyptus for the core material and waterproof glue for help water resistance.

Regular Plywood: Primarily used in dry areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, studies, etc. The most common is combi core and poplar plywood but it’s easy bending.

Construction Plywood: Primarily used for residential buildings and outdoor furniture.

Locally popular wood species: poplar / Eucalyptus / combi poplar

3. Key Plywood Grades & Quality Standards

A. Check the veneer material: What wood species and grade (A/B/C) are used? Each grade has different quality, with A being the highest quality. Normally Eucalyptus is better than Combi better than Poplar.

B. Environmental rating: E0/E1/ENF. Each grade represents a different formaldehyde emission level. Prioritize boards with lower formaldehyde emissions; ENF is better than E0, which is better than E1.

C. Thickness tolerance: Normal tolerance is within 0.2mm-0.5mm.

D. Moisture content: Optimal is 8-12%.

E. Manufacturing process: Prioritize plywood formed by two hot-pressing or two cold-pressing processes. This reduces the likelihood of delamination and cracking and provides better nail-holding power.

F. Furface treatment: Prioritize plywood with 2-3 sanding processes. This reduces the likelihood of bubbles and results in a smoother surface.

4. Standard Thickness Guide for Philippine Furniture Projects

5/9mm: Back panel, shelves, drawer side panels

12/15mm: Cabinet side panels, shelves

18/25mm: Load-bearing cabinet body, wardrobe main body, countertop support

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Plywood in PH:

A.  Focusing solely on price without inquiring about the core wood species or moisture and water resistance ratingswhichincreases after-sales and renovation costs.

B. Ignoring glue grade and focusing only on price increases the risk of purchasing boards with excessive formaldehyde levels.

C. Ignoring the manufacturing process increases the risk of purchasing boards produced one times hot-pressing process.

D. Ignoring the number of sanding passes increases the risk of purchasing boards with uneven surfaces or bubbly finishes.

E. Ignoring certifications and relevant testing reports negatively impacts customs clearance and bidding for market projects.

Conclusion:

If you consider and verify factors such as material, thickness, glue grade, and certification/testing reports when selecting boards, you will definitely be able to choose a suitable board for your needs and different application scenarios based on your budget.
